(a) The author reflects on his being 26 years old and about to become a father. He then writes of the duties imposed on him by his position. Namely, the fact that Providence has placed him in "the happiest society". He describes things from his childhood that were important to him (such as his education) and concludes by saying that it will be necessary for him to keep his affairs in order. (b) He begins with a kind of introduction on happiness and observes that one often sees more happiness in less privileged social classes than his own. He reaches the conclusion that the higher man's position in society, the higher the expectation. He then recounts the rise of his own family and admits that it was their reputation which enabled him to obtain his position as Secretary of the Legation in Paris and that being a member of this family imposes many duties upon him. |
