| Biographical information | Daughter of Louis d'Affry (Captain of the Swiss Guard at Versailles and future Landamman) and Marie Anne Constantine de Diesbach Steinbrugg. In 1800 she married the Count of Villardin, Jean Antoine Vendelin de Castella de Berlens. However, the Count died accidentally after only four months of marriage. She did not remarry, but became a central figure within the Fribourg social elite during the early years of the nineteenth century. | |

The young author writes about her main daily activities. These included social calls, walks and evenings comprised of dinner, games and dancing. She also keeps a note of when she gave confession and the masses she attended. There is a detailed account of her marriage ceremony on April 21, 1800. She then recounts the various stops on her honeymoon – which took her and her husband to Murten, Bern, Basel, Strasbourg, Colmar and Solothurn before they returned to Fribourg. Afterwards, she continued to record her travels in the region; particularly the visits she made to her parents in Givisiez. Finally, she writes of "the passage of troops". Entries are written at intervals and sometimes only a date is noted. This suggests she left room for text to be added in retrospectively. |
