The first page of the diary is dedicated to the writer's wife. Bartolomeo Tommaso Maurizio remembers the words he pronounced at the moment of his departure for Germany on 9 August 1807 : "May God care for you! Take care of the children and take care of your duties." An account of his and his son Tommaso's journey to Monaco follows. On pp. 4-95 and pp. 130-166, Bartolomeo Tommaso transcribes passages from the Old and the New Testament. On p. 96, he reports some remedies for illnesses; on p. 98 he transcribes a recipe for making ink. We also find accounting notes, proverbs, news from his home country, news copied from newspapers (for example on pp. 117-120, he transcribes a speech made by Napoleon to the Senate on September 5, 1808, reported in the Journal of Frankfurt) and events related to everyday life. The second part of the diary is used by Bartolomeo to copy information from newspapers concerning the Napoleonic wars. On pp. 315-324, he enumerates the letters written and received between 1807 and 1810. The last pages are devoted to accounting. |
