Biographical information | Son of Franz Ludwig and Elisabeth de Mestral. In 1736, he married Dorothea Salome von Erlach, daughter of Viktor. From 1745 onwards, he was a councillor in Bern; bailiff in Nidau (1752-58), from 1762 onwards, commander in the priory of Moutier-Grandval. From 1762 onwards, he was a member of the library commission and the school council in Bern and acted as censor. In 1739, he founded, together with Johann Georg Altmann, the Deutsche Gesellschaft (German Society) to cultivate language and literature. In 1759, he was one of the founding members of the Economic Society of Bern, which he presided over in 1767 and 1769. In 1747, he suggested the foundation of a Historical Society. In 1762, he joined the Helvetic Society and became its president in 1766. | |

Wattenwyl's earlier diaries have been lost, it seems – this is apparent from a note in the first booklet. |
