Content | Tavel, as he states himself, writes this text for his young children. He wants to confess his mistakes and aims to write "with sincerity". His life story begins with the depiction of his origins in a "good patrician" family and a characterisation of his parents. He writes about his birth and his education. In 1772, he enters the military service of Piedmont, but falls seriously ill and returns to the Bernese region in the same year. In the following years, "boredom and idleness" dominate Tavel's life; he has "a lot of female company"; he also works in an office. In the Burgerbesatzung (election for the Grand Council) of 1781, Tavel is not elected to become a member, despite good prospects. He then writes about his marriage and the birth of his children. He wants to educate them to become "valuable fellow citizens". His autobiography written at the same time is obviously part of this plan. |
