Biographical information | Son of Marcus Sigmund Emanuel and Katharina Jenner. Officer in Holland. In 1798, W. participated in the surrender negotiations with General Alexis Balthasar Henri Antoine von Schauenburg and thus preserved the city of Bern from being pillaged. W. did not belong to the ultraconservatives of the Bernese patriciate, he advocated for a moderate federalist approach. This may have been the reason why he was invited together with his mentor von Mülinen to Paris by Bonaparte, though he was not formally a member of the Consulta. In 1802, he was appointed Landammann (head of state) of Switzerland, but had to renounce the office due to pressure from France. Member of the Grand Council of Bern (1803-17) and of the National Economics Commission (1810-17). | ||
