Biography in letter form, with a total of 14 letters. Salzgeber notes that he is writing for didactic purposes, and the text is indeed interspersed with advice to his grandchildren. The autobiography contains little on politics and contemporary history (such as the Helvetic Republic). After a few notes about his childhood, the text begins with his journey to Chiavenna for educational purposes, at the age of 16. Even if some details of his inner life are mentioned, he mainly describes his professional and political career, such as his apprenticeship as a merchant and scribe, numerous trips to the Valtellina, and dangerous situations, such as the time he barely avoided death from frostbite during a pass crossing. The deaths and illnesses of his parents, his children as well as his wife are discussed. The family relations are portrayed as being very important. Many acquaintances and relationships are mentioned. |
