Volume 1 (1764—86): The first page reads: "Short biography of myself written to my children". The author goes on to write about her childhood, as well as her marriage and the birth of her first children. Volume 2 (1786—98): Includes family matters; the birth of more children; and the death of a child. Volume 3 (1799—1801): Family matters and the education of her children. Volume 4 (1802—04): Mention of her husband's illness. Volume 5 (1805—06). Volume 6 (1806—07): Illness and death of husband. Volume 7 (1808—08). Volume 8 (1808—09). Volume 9 (1809—10). Volume 10 (1810—32): From 1819 there are only a few entries with large gaps in-between. This tenth volume includes loose leaves. At the end there is a "Short Complement to the Self-biography of Helena Schlatter-Bernet, excerpts from her own notes in the Memorabilia of the period v. 1820 to 1832". The handwriting is not her own. Overall, the author's writing has a religious sensibility and most volumes begin with the words "Dear children!" |
