| Content | The young woman was 22 years old at the diary's outset. She intended to write on a daily basis, but did not always manage to do so and there are several long breaks between entries. She describes her daily activities, the places she visited and the people she meets. Indeed, after becoming governess to Princess Marie at the Weimar court, she also writes of the Duke, Duchess, Grand Duchess, and Goethe (especially the way his days are punctuated). In addition, she mentions her reading and regularly writes about her health (we learn she often suffered from an upset stomach). She devotes one particular diary to the Princess; although it only incidentally accounts for activities with her young pupil. She also devotes many lines before her daily reports to a thorough examination of conscience. |
