The author kept a notebook each year until his death. In the last notebook the entry for October 20, 1834 is written in another hand and states: "the dear father has left us today". Each notebook is systematically organized in the same way: the date is inscribed in the left-hand margins and accompanied by meteorological observations; while the right-hand page mentions daily activities (visits received or returned; walks; shopping in town; writing etc.). He also specifies when he did nothing so that each day has at least one entry.
