Content |
He began writing the diary on arrival at Prangins following his father's death. However, between 1771 and 1776 his secretary wrote the diary on his behalf; keeping a record of their visitors, as well as readings and activities in connection with the estate. Between March and September 1777 Louis-François travelled to Italy alongside his secretary and two female members of his family. During this period the diary became solely a record of their travels and was written in a separate notebook. From 1778 until his death in 1786 the diary records life at Prangins: visitors and festivities, as well as theatrical events and concerts staged there. The author also makes notes about family life: his marriage; the birth of his children; childrearing; and his own troubled health. On occasion, it was his wife Matilda who wrote the diary. |
