After some biographical information, the writer describes the various journeys he made in his life. He made his first trip at the age of twenty, when he went to Besançon for studying. He stayed there during three years. After that he went to Vienna. During his holidays, he returned home to visit his parents and discovered new regions. He went to France, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. It enumerates the cities which he passed through and gives cultural, geographical and historical information about them. He also enriches his text by sharing his impressions and by telling a number of anecdotes, especially concerning the difficulties encountered on the road - for example when crossing the Tyrol on foot or about his health problems during a trip to Italy, which led him to spend about a month at the hospital in Milan (from page 520). These travel stories have an autobiographical character. The writer gives indications on his academic background and the reasons that led him to travel (especially for studies, but also to discover other countries). He also talks about his dream to go around the world and see America, 338). Travel stories begin at p. 117. They are preceded (pp. 1-96) by a copy of excerpts from the history of the missions of the Capuchin fathers in Savoy, by Father Charles of Geneva. |
