This is the story of a missionary in China: his journey from Europe took about two years and he stayed in China for about ten years. He was sent to China "for the baptism of fifty thousand children, for the establishment of schools, the practice of piety and the instruction of some disciples who are priests". The author enumerates the many dangers encountered in this country (persecution by the pagans, difficulties during sea voyages [storms and diseases], wild animals such as tigers, which he fears less than the pagans). The writer also shares some reflections on his life with the reader, especially regarding predictions that came true. The text further includes some information on the customs and habits of the Chinese (New Year, processions of the mandarins in times of drought, funeral ceremonies). |
