The author writes one to four times a month. He begins by recording his marriage and summarizes the political events (Second Villmergen War) that influenced the date of the wedding celebration. Subsequent entries concern the goods he receives or is owed; amounts paid for various purchases (clothes, wigs etc.); and matters concerning his wife. For instance, he records his displeasure in allowing her to manage his property. He also notes any deaths in the family; as well as the birth of his children and later the arrangements he makes for their education.
He also talks about his daily activities and various jobs (harvesting, sowing etc.) He notes the commitment of the domestic servants and in particular the nanny during the birth of his children. He also records unusual weather events (e.g. hail, heavy snow, thunderstorms) or things that affect him directly: the fire in his chalet and its reconstruction; and the various lawsuits involving members of his family. He also writes down the recipes for various home remedies. At the end of each year he summarizes how it went and in particular its distinguishing weather conditions (e.g. a harsh winter or drought). He also assesses the year's harvests and the state of the country.
