Content | Written as thirty-one separate principles for his grandchildren, the author explains how to behave well in order to "attract God's blessing". The first twenty-eight principles (the dangers of bad company; the horror of duels; and his hatred of gambling etc.) were things that would mostly concern the boys. Point 29, however, is specifically addressed to his "dear little girls". It summarizes the education they should receive and stresses the importance of following their mother's example. He concludes with a plea in which he enjoins his children and grandchildren to remain in the Reformed faith; and tries to convince them of what he sees as the errors of the Catholic religion. |
