1) Daughter of Jean de Tournes and Judith Rilliet. 2) Son of Jean-Jacques Gautier and Marie-Renée (daughter of André Mollet). In 1792 he married Françoise Marie Antoinette. They had four children: Jean-Alfred Gautier (1793); Jean-Antoine Charles (1795); Adelaïde (1797); and Constance (1800). He was a merchant. The journal concerns Jean-Alfred Gautier (1793-1881) who became a Doctor of Philosophy and Honorary Professor of Astronomy and Mathematics at the Academy of Geneva. |

Content | The diary was written by his mother and father (although predominantly by the mother). It records the progress and development of their first son, Alfred. They make observations as to his health, development and character. Gradually, the diary focuses on the boy's education. The last entry is dated June 2, 1802 (when he was 8 years old). It ends with the mother expressing a wish to God: that He blesses their care and that Alfred becomes "an honest man". |
