The diary begins on February 10, 1790: the day Jean-Henri left to do his military service. Until June 1, 1796 his writings do not take the form of a diary, but rather that of notes. He writes about his arrival in Holland and his life as a cadet and then as an officer. He also recounts several battles in which his regiment fought. He wrote this first part retrospectively (probably in 1796). From June 1, 1796 Jean-Henri writes daily. He records his activities and the society he meets. He also relates the courting of his future wife, Louise de Wildermeth. The diary ceases all of a sudden three days after their wedding. |
