Biographical information
Son of Henri Gabriel de Mestral (Lord of Outard). In 1768 he married Sophie-Elisabeth (born Guiguer de Prangins). Two of their three children survived infancy: Henri Georges (1770-1849) and Armand Louis de Mestral (1772-1854). Charles-Albert served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Dutch military. He also served as Lieutenant for the Bailiff of Aubonne.

He writes advice to his sons who are leaving Aubonne to go to the University of Edinburgh. The diary is divided into six sections: thoughts about their studies; economy; punctuality; games; honor; and false modesty. It shows the father's great interest in the education of his two sons.
