| Biographical information | Son of Heinrich, a counsellor, and Rosina Stüssi. In 1694, he married Barbara Elmer, daughter of Heinrich, a councillor. After her death, he married, in 1708, Magdalena Blumer, daughter of Peter, a councillor. He studied theology at the Carolinum in Zurich (from 1688 onwards), he was consecrated in Basel in 1690, become deacon in Schwanden in 1692 and astor in 1719. Tschudi cultivated his erudition thanks to his friendship with Johann Jakob Scheuchzer and his many eminent correspondents. After various theological, medical and topical writings, he published the first historical and geographical description of the canton of Glarus in 1714. From 1714 to 1726, he edited the journal Monatliche Gespräche, which was part of the early Enlightenment movement. | |
