Biographical information | Son of François and Marie Wicht. Schooling in Fribourg, liberal arts studies in Freiburg im Breisgau (1571-1574), then theology studies in Fribourg (Switzerland) and possibly in Besançon, ordination (1578). Canon of the chapter of St. Nicholas (1577, cantor and secretary in 1578), school catechist and member of the Scholarenkammer, parish priest of Fribourg (1580). In 1581, Werro undertook a pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem, the account of which has come down to us. Dean of the chapter in 1589, he continued his theological studies at the Jesuit college in Rome until 1593 (doctorate). In the same year, he initiated the register of matrimonial court cases in Freiburg, which he maintained himself until 1601. Provost of St. Nicholas (from 1597), city preacher from 1599 until his death. Apostolic administrator of the diocese (1598-1600), again vicar general under Bishop Jean Doroz (1600-1601). In 1601, tensions with the government of Fribourg and the chapter, particularly over the reform of the diocese, the episcopal residence and the implementation of conciliar decisions, led him to resign his offices as provost and vicar general. Werro was a leading figure of the Catholic Reformation in the canton of Fribourg and supported the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in the Catholic cantons. | |
