Biographical information | Son of Albrecht, a bailiff and colonel, and Margaretha von Erlach. In 1766, he married Salome von Erlach. At the age of 17, he entered the French military service, first in the Swiss Guard, then in Erlach's Bernese regiment, in which he participated in the Seven Years' War. He was a lieutenant-colonel in the Bernese militia and bailiff of Lausanne (1787-1793). Member of the Grand Council (1775), of the Small Council (1793), and repeatedly delegate to the Diet. Lord of Moosseedorf and Wylhof (later Hofwyl), Baron of Spiez; he sold the domain to his cousin Ferdinand (1765-1801). As a member of the Natural History Society, he was particularly interested in geology and possessed an important collection of minerals. | |

Content | The volume contains historical records of various kinds, e.g. about the Peasants' War of 1653. Approximately from the middle of the volume, the text becomes autobiographical; a text entitled "Secours de Genève en 1792" follows, in which von Erlach writes about his role in the annexation of Savoy by France. Under the title "Histoire de mon Arrestation en 1798", he describes the circumstances of his arrest; he finished this text in April 1799 (28 pages), according to his own notes. At the end of the volume is an untitled 16-page diary from 1 January to 14 April 1790. |
