Biographical information | Son of the merchant Augustin-Christophorus and Catharina née Kämpfen. Augustini attended the Jesuit College in Brig. In 1762, he entered the French and Spanish military service. From 1781 onwards, he was a lawyer and notary in Brig, from 1785 to 1787 bailiff of Monthey. In 1787, he became deputy of the district Leuk. In 1793, he bought votes for the governor of Brig and the ensuing anger of the people forced him to flee. From 1798 onwards, he was a member of the provisional government. In 1798, he negotiated in Bern about the accession of the Valais to the Helvetic Republic. In 1801, he was president of the Valais Chamber of Administration. After his election to the senate, he became its secretary, then its president. He had a political and diplomatic career. He was co-author of the penal and civil code of the Valais, an avowed friend of France and an unequivocal admirer of Napoleon. His contemporaries saw him as a power-hungry, unprincipled man. | |
