Biographical information | Son of Johannes. In 1527, he married Martha Fuchs, daughter of Leonhard, a merchant and mayor of Neuenburg am Rhein (D), and of Margarethe Zscheckenbürlin, of Basel. He studied law with Ulrich Zasius in Freiburg im Breisgau and with Andreas Alciatus in Avignon, where he received his doctorate in 1525. Appointed by the University of Basel in 1524, Amerbach taught the Institutions (1525-30), then Roman law until 1536. Lawyer, oftentimes rector, city advocate of Basel. As trustee of the Erasmus Foundation, he became the patron of many students from 1536 onwards. | |
