Biographical information | Son of Johann Rudolf, commander of the Aarburg fortress. He married Marie Aimée Guichelin, a poetess from Paris. Graduate of the Politic Institute in Bern. Trainee at the Bern State Chancellery. Steck was the head of a group of young patricians who advocated reforms, to which Albert Friedrich May also belonged. In 1795, he was one of the pupils of Johann Gottlieb Fichte in Jena. In 1797, he stayed in Paris. From April to June 1798, he was General Secretary of the Helvetic Directorate (the executive of the Helvetic Republic). He played a decisive role in the development of the Helvetic Republic's administration. However, he was dismissed due to pressure from France and retired to his country estate in Moosseedorf. From 1803 onwards, he was a member of the Grand Council of Bern and of the Court of Appeal. He is regarded as the creator of the Bernese criminal code. | |

Content | Diary in the form of weekly reviews, with a diary-like overview of daily business, a summary of work done, as well as some remarks on his own "moral condition". It is not a narrative, but a highly tabular text in which the author uses numerous codes. These are explained at the beginning of the volume (e.g., + = attention; * = interest). The volume also serves as an accounts book and contains numerous payrolls. |
