Biographical information |
Son of Hans Jacob. In 1769 he married Anna Magdalena Escher, daughter of the alderman Hans Caspar. His career can be summarised as follows: 1775: On the Great Council. 1778: Bailiff of Baden. 1781: On the Small Council. 1785: Bailiff of Horgen. 1792: Federal representative during [French?] occupation of the border near Basel. 1797—98: Envoy of Zurich at the last federal convention in Aargau. 1798: Member of provisional government, but deposed during Helvetic Republic. 1799: Kept hostage in Basel during revolution. 1801: Minister of Justice in Helvetic Republic. 1802: President of interim government, but arrested and interned after the French intervened. 1803: Resigned from political life and turned to scientific studies. Hirzel is regarded as one of the most important old-regime politicians during the revolutionary period in Zurich. |
