Biographical information | Son of Horace Bénédict and Albertine Amélie Boissier. In 1796 he married Renée Fabri, the daughter of a secretary of justice by the name of Pierre. Having studied at the Academy of Geneva, he specialized in chemistry and was considered one of the founders of plant chemistry. He was Professor of Mineralogy and Geology at the Academy of Geneva (1802-1835), but taught little; preferring instead to continue his research into the composition of alcohol and carbon dioxide – as well as that of biochemical processes from 1808 onwards. This work led to various publications between 1814 and 1841: on starch; the ripening of fruits and flowers; the germination of wheat; and the fermentation of alcohol. A member of all the leading academies and scientific societies of Europe, de Saussure became (despite being a naturalist) a world authority in the field of organic chemistry. | |
