Biographical information | Son of Anne Mallet and Jean-Isaac (a doctor). In 1727 he married Sara Chomel (the daughter of a merchant by the name of Jean) and became a lawyer after studying law at the Academy of Geneva. He was Professor of Civil and Natural Law at the Academy from 1723 until 1738. A member of the Grand Council from 1728 and of the CC Council from 1738, Jean Cramer was Treasurer, Mayor on five occasions and First Mayor in 1770. A specialist in Roman law, he wrote a twelve-volume collection on jurisprudence, as well as a Commentary on civil edicts (17551761). | ||

Content | Jean Cramer's chronicle is concerned mainly with the internal politics of Geneva (elections; minutes of meetings of the Council of State; decrees; exchanges of letters etc.) He also writes about diplomatic relations with France and the Swiss Cantons; as well as recording the criticism and censorship of political speeches and literary texts (i.e. Rousseau) and of politicians themselves (i.e. Tronchin). |
