The first two volumes concern a trip made by the author to Italy. From Yverdon he travelled to Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice, and several cities in Northern Italy and Italian Switzerland – where he crossed the Gotthard. He recorded his daily activities in the form of a journal (some of which appears to have been written up later from his notes). He talks about cultural excursions (he painted many of the monuments he visted); the knowledge he found in Rome; and the personal relationships he maintained via dinners or evenings spent with certain individuals. Indeed, he made numerous contacts (especially with artists like himself) and in the first volume (p.4) lists the mainly foreign artists he met in Rome. He regularly mentions the state of his finances and records the cost of various everyday items (e.g. food, candles, soap, laundry); as well as meals taken at inns. Occasionally, he writes emotionally about his discovery of Italy and mentions the glorious past of Rome and the degeneration of the arts. |
