| Biographical information | Son of Samuel (a pastor) and Barbe Tribolet, he married the daughter of Pastor David Rognon, Marie-Françoise-Charlotte. After her death he married Rosette, the daughter of Jean-Jacques Du Pasquier – a Bied cotton manufacturer. Between 1766 and 1768 he studied at the Bale Academy; while from 1769 to 1772 he was a student and private tutor in Geneva. He served as pastor at Neuchâtel from 1789 to 1806. During this time he was also a literary critic, editor of the Journal Helvétique and a Professor of Philosophy and Theology. In 1798 he was appointed Dean of the Vénérable Classe of Pastors of Neuchâtel. | ||

Henry-David Chaillet starts writing his diary when he was a student. He spent one year in Basel under the supervision of Professor Raillard and then came back to Neuchâtel. In his diary, he takes notes about his daily activities and his thoughts. He is closely linked to the woman writer Isabelle de Charrière. Chaillet describes in particular his formation to become a pastor and his troubles with his mother. During the year 1768, he also notes his observations on insects. |
